German Popov

German Popov (* 1966 in Odessa ) is a musician who publishes and works under the artist name OMFO (acronym for Our Man From Odessa ). In its music, OMFO combines traditional melodies with electronic sounds.

Life

German Popov, who was born in the Ukrainian port city of Odessa, emigrated to Amsterdam in 1989 . His parents gave him the first name German, after the cosmonaut and second man in space, German Titow . As an explorer, German Popov likes to travel through Central Asia and make live recordings of the traditional songs and melodies of the steppe to the modern restaurant bands of Tashkent with their tinny keyboard sound.

“I love the music of shepherds, especially that of shepherds in small villages somewhere deep in Asia. They use the simplest of instruments, but play beautiful songs. I wonder what their songs would sound like if they could use instruments like Kraftwerk. Unfortunately, you can't. Me, yes."
