The OS / 2 Warp Server is an operating system from IBM for use as a network server . It is based on the IBM OS / 2 Warp operating system and has been expanded to include other IBM network products.

Components

The file and print services were previously available separately as IBM LAN Server . IBM TCP / IP for OS / 2 with DDNS / DHCP server support and NFS is also included. The remote access services are also known as LAN Distance Remote Server. SystemView (later Tivoli TME10, Netfinity) is used for system administration . A data backup is possible with the Warp Server Backup , which was formerly called Personally Safe'n'Sound .

Development history

While IBM sold the large number of OS / 2 products as individual components until 1995, there was already a change in strategy with the OS / 2 Warp Connect Version 3 product . In addition to the actual operating system, complete network support for all common environments was already included in the scope of delivery.

The OS / 2 Warp Server Version 4 introduced in early 1996 was still based on OS / 2 Warp Version 3 . The Advanced version (English, Advanced ) is with the improved file system HPFS386 designed for a larger number of users. There were only major changes to the basic system with the version for multiprocessor systems ( SMP ) presented at the end of the year .

Since 1997 the Warp Server has also been part of the IBM strategy for network computing . For example, it served as a server for the thin client solution Workspace on Demand .

The last major version for the time being, OS / 2 Warp Server for e-business , appeared in 1999 and, in addition to a new kernel , brought with it the JFS file system and Java support.

OS / 2 Warp Server for e-business also contained:

The 386 High Performance File System Upgrade and the Security Package were offered as additional products .

Updates were then offered via Software Choice or Passport Advantage:

Updated installation media were made available to customers with maintenance contracts beginning in 2001:

  • ACP1 - Aurora Convenience Package 1 for OS / 2 Warp Server for e-business (Version 4.51)
