O Sul é o Meu País (German The South is my country ) is a separatist movement founded in 1992 , which calls for the independence of the southern Brazilian states of Paraná , Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul .

founding

The association was founded on the occasion of the Second Separatist Congress (Segundo Congresso Separatista from July 18 to 19, 1992) in Laguna by the local politician Adílcio Cadorin on July 19, 1992.

The president today (2015) is Odilon Xavier Freitas, his predecessor was the historian and journalist Celso Deucher , who is considered the chief ideologist.

In 2007, the Zero Hora newspaper reported membership as 30,000 and a number of sympathizers of 300,000. It is the largest of the newer separatist movements in southern Brazil.

aims

The purpose is to achieve the political and administrative independence of the Região Sul do Brasil (region of southern Brazil) and to prepare a referendum. O Sul é o Meu País does not appear as a political party because the objectives of Article 1 of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988 would be unconstitutional.

Symbols

The movement uses a blue flag with three stars to represent the three states as a symbol. In addition to the flag, participants usually use the political map of southern Brazil, which contains the abbreviations of the states, in conjunction with the name of the movement.
