The Oak Street Bridge is a four-lane bridge in the Canadian province of British Columbia . It bridges the Fraser River and connects Vancouver with Lulu Island in the Richmond community . Highway 99 runs over the 213.20 m long T- beam bridge . Their field widths are 60.9 meters - 91.4 meters - 60.9 meters.
The Oak Street Bridge was opened on July 3, 1957. During the planning phase, it was still called New Marpole Bridge . After the opening, the Marpole Bridge , located further west, was torn down from 1889 to Sea Island . In retrospect, this turned out to be a planning error. Traffic shifted eastward, causing the business districts along Hudson Street and Marine Drive to become increasingly deserted. In addition, the volume of traffic in the direction of Richmond and Vancouver International Airport increased unexpectedly.
The bridge was tolled for the first two years . It was relieved from 1974 by the Arthur Laing Bridge to Sea Island. In 1995 two lanes were closed alternately in order to rehabilitate the carriageway and to install protective devices against earthquakes .
