Sea Island is an island in the southwest of the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is best known as the location of the Vancouver International Airport . In the language of the First Nation originally located here , in Halkomelem , their name is Sq'sazun . The meaning of this name is unknown.

Sea Iceland is located about 15 kilometers south of downtown Vancouver in the field of city Richmond in the estuary of the Fraser River . South of the island is Lulu Island , which is where most of the city of Richmond is located. North of the island, the Burrard Peninsula borders the Fraser River and thus Sea Island. In 2001 the population was 736. At the northern tip of the island there is a 1.4 km 2 nature reserve , which is off the approach and departure routes of the aircraft and is not allowed to be entered. A Canadian Coast Guard facility is located on the southwest tip . There are two public beaches , McDonald Beach Park and Iona Beach Regional Park.

Vancouver International Airport

The island is the location of the Vancouver International Airport . The airport , located in the west of the island, opened in 1931 and the first scheduled flight took place in 1937. The airport was significantly expanded in the 1990s. Today it is the second largest in Canada with 16 million passengers annually, consists of three terminals and has three runways.

Transport links

The island is connected to the surrounding area via five road bridges, all of which are in the northeast, east and southeast of the island. In the northeast, the Arthur Laing Bridge connects the island directly with the Burrard Peninsula. To the south, the No. 2 Road Bridge Sea Island with Lulu Island. Most of the traffic with Vancouver and Richmond runs over these two bridges. To the east, the Dinsmore Bridge , the Moray Bridge and the Sea Island Connector connect the island with Lulu Island.

There is also the Middle Arm Bridge to Lulu Island for the Canada Line of the SkyTrain Vancouver . The train provides a quick connection between central Vancouver and the airport on the island. The travel time between the final stops Waterfront Station and YVR – Airport Station is 25 minutes. The further connection to the local public transport takes place through various lines of the company TransLink . Their buses run to Vancouver and Richmond.
