Obelisco Esquilino
The Obelisco Esquilino is a Roman obelisk . It is located behind the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore in the Piazza dell'Esquilino . It is the counterpart of the obelisk in the Piazza del Quirinale , with which it stood in front of the Augustus mausoleum . It was excavated at the Mausoleum of Augustus under Pope Leo X in 1519, but was initially not erected again. Sixtus V had the obelisk erected near Santa Maria Maggiore in 1587. It was meant to serve as a guide for pilgrims coming from the north .
