Obelisk in the park of Villa Celimontana

The Obelisco Matteiano or Obelisco della Villa Celimontana is an Egyptian obelisk, or a fragment of 2.68 meters high and is located in the Villa Celimontana in Rome.

description

It is the twin of the obelisk in front of the Pantheon . It also comes from the Temple of Ra in Heliopolis and was there by Ramses II between 1279 and 1213 BC. Built in BC. It was brought to Rome by the Romans and is believed to be in the Iseum Campense , the sanctuary of Isis .

The obelisk has stood on the Capitol near Santa Maria in Aracoeli since the 14th century , where it is mentioned for the first time in 1407. In the course of a redesign of the Capitol, it was dismantled in 1542, but not rebuilt. In 1582 the obelisk was donated by the Senate of Rome to the noble art collector Ciriaco Mattei , who had it installed on September 11, 1587 in the garden of the Villa Mattei on the Caelius. In the following centuries the villa fell into disrepair and the obelisk fell over again. At the beginning of the 19th century (1817 or 1820) the Spanish statesman Manuel de Godoy had the obelisk re-erected at its current location when he was living in the Villa Celimontana for some time.

As a result of the turmoil of time, the obelisk had become so short that it was supplemented by a suitably cut granite block.
