The Obelisco Macuteo

The Obelisco Macuteo or Obelisco del Pantheon is an Egyptian obelisk in Rome on the Piazza della Rotonda in front of the Pantheon on a fountain.

description

It was excavated in 1575 (according to other sources already two centuries earlier) and initially placed in front of the Church of San Macuto , opposite Sant'Ignazio on the Piazza di San Macuto. In 1711 Pope Clement XI let him . set up on a late baroque fountain in front of the Pantheon. In the pyramidion - the top of the obelisk - there are two name cartouches of Ramses II. The 6.34 m high obelisk was also believed to be a work of the Roman period like the obelisk on Piazza Navona. In antiquity, he too stood in Emperor Domitian's sanctuary of Isis, i.e. in the immediate vicinity of the Pantheon.

The obelisk forms a pair with the granite stump Obelisco Matteiano in the Villa Mattei , together they once stood in the sanctuary of Amun-Re in Heliopolis .
