Higher Appeal Court Diez

The Diez Higher Appeal Court was the Higher Appeal Court of the Duchy of Nassau from 1810 and the joint Higher Appeal Court of the Nassau principalities with its seat in Diez from 1813 to 1815 .

With the Rhine Confederation Act , Hadamar fell to the Grand Duchy of Berg in 1806 . This gave rise to the situation that the Hadamar Higher Appeal Court , which was responsible for the Duchy of Nassau, was outside its national border. A transfer of the court was therefore discussed in the government of the Duchy of Nassau . Usingen , Neuwied , Ehrenbreitstein , Eltville , Höchst and Diez applied for the new seat of the court . With a decree of July 15, 1809, Duke Friedrich Wilhelm regulated that the court should move to Diez on May 1, 1810. The orphanage building in Diez became the new seat of the court. On May 5, 1810, the court began its work. It still consisted of 6 councilors and Karl Friedrich August von Dalwigk as president at its head.

After the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, the Grand Duchy of Berg disintegrated and Nassau-Orange received its hereditary lands back. With § 7 of the house contract of November 26th, 1813 it was agreed between the Duchy of Nassau and Nassau-Orange that the Higher Appeal Court of Diez should now also be responsible for the Orange hereditary lands. With the house contract of July 14, 1814 details were regulated. Orange was to bear 1/3 of the costs and nominate the councils. The number of councils should be increased to 8 and a second chamber should be set up.

On September 2, 1814, the grand opening of the Diez Higher Appeal Court took place.

As a result of the Congress of Vienna , the Duchy of Nassau received the Orange hereditary lands as part of an exchange of territory. This made the Diez Higher Appeal Court again the Duchy's Higher Appeal Court. In 1818 the court was moved to Wiesbaden and formed the Wiesbaden Higher Appeal Court .
