Upper stage in the National Theater Mannheim

The upper stage is the part of the stage in event venues with a stage that is located above the stage area that is visible from the auditorium . In a broader sense, every facility above the playing area is included in the upper stage.

The upper stage includes the portal (the stage opening with two side towers, which can be adjusted in some places) and the lighting bridges (catwalks above the stage for attaching and aligning spotlights). The stage machinery in the upper stage is called the upper machinery . This includes numerous pulling devices for curtains , stage brochures and other parts of the set . Flying machines ( airframes ) are also operated from there. In the upper stage there is a false ceiling that the stage technicians can walk on, which is called the Schnürboden .

Similarly, everything that is under the stage floor is referred to as the lower stage .
