Bucharest trolleybus
The Bucharest trolleybus is the trolleybus system of the Romanian capital Bucharest and with 18 lines is by far the largest in the country. The network was opened in 1949 as the second Romanian trolleybus operation - after Timișoara - and has since supplemented the Bucharest tram that has existed since 1872 . The trolleybus - like the tram and the urban bus service - is operated by the municipal transport company Societatea de Transport București , or STB for short . , operated. This emerged from the Societatea Comunală a Tramvaielor, Bucureşti ( STB ), which was renamed Întreprinderea de Transport Bucureşti ( ITB ) in 1950 on the occasion of the introduction of the trolleybus and was finally given its current name in 1990 as a result of the 1989 revolution .
history
After there were initial plans for a trolleybus operation in Bucharest as early as the 1930s, construction work began on October 1, 1949. As early as November 10, 1949, the line operation began on the first line, it ran from the Piața Victoriei over the Șoseaua Kiseleff to the former Hipodrom Băneasa. In 1957, the conversion of the central east-west axis in the tram network led to the introduction of a second trolleybus line with the number 84. In the next two decades, the network was greatly expanded from 36 kilometers in 1960, over 147 kilometers in 1968 to 179 Kilometers in 1980. The expansion of the Bucharest Metro, which opened in 1979 , ultimately led to a significant reduction in the network. In 1986 and 1987 alone, a third of the route network was shut down again. The replacement of the north-south axis by the M2 metro line in this context ultimately led to the special feature of an operationally independent sub-network in the south of the city. The next new lines did not go back into operation until the mid-1990s, and there is also a medium-term intention to reconnect the two sub-networks.
