The trolleybus Tbilisi ( Georgian თბილისის ტროლეიბუსი , tbilissis troleibussi ) was the trolleybus operator of the Georgian capital Tbilisi .

history

It was opened on April 21, 1936 as the first trolleybus service in Georgia. It opened up the entire city center and operated in addition to the tram, which opened in 1883, and the metro, which opened in 1966 . After temporarily serving up to 21 lines , the trolleybus operation declined sharply after the country became independent. The systems suffered badly from vandalism, and long sections of the overhead line were stolen. While around 310 cars were still available in the 1980s, there were only 137 cars left in 1990. In 2004 there were still 80, of which only 40 were operational. The Tbilisi trolleybus was finally discontinued on December 4, 2006 together with the tram.

Some elements of the trolleybus overhead line still exist today, but they are used for street lighting . A large part of the overhead line in the city center has already been removed.
