The Tbilisi tram ( Georgian თბილისის ტრამვაი , tbilissis tramwai ) was a tram company of the Georgian capital Tbilisi . The length of the route at its greatest extent (1986) was approx. 54 km.

history

The tram service was opened in 1883 as a meter-gauge horse tram (so-called "Konka", Georgian კონკა ). The route network was electrified in 1904 and converted to Russian broad gauge (1524 mm) in 1938 . The tram network was operated electrically for a total of 103 years. Since 1950 it has been reduced by line closures. The tram service together with the trolleybus network was discontinued on December 4, 2006.

present

A small number of tracks on the former Tbilisi tram still exist. Some of the overhead lines are still there, but the masts now also function as street lighting, among other things . Historic trams are occasionally used as street cafes.

A reactivation of the network with new lines appears possible. The reasons for this are the high CO 2 content in the air. The new tram is to have a light rail-like character and run separately on its own route.
