The regional directorate Karlsruhe was as Safety Authority from 1 January 1872 to 1919, a regional directorate (OPD) of the imperial post in Karlsruhe . In 1919 this became an OPD of the Reich Ministry of Post .

The new building was carried out in the years 1934–1938 by the architect Hermann Billing (1867–1948). He is considered one of the most important representatives of Art Nouveau in southwest Germany. Since the Oberpostdirektion Konstanz was dissolved in 1934, the Oberpostdirektion Karlsruhe was responsible for the entire Baden area. From April 1, 1934 until the end of World War II, all Oberpostdirektion officially carried the designation Reichspostdirektion (RPD).

After the end of the Second World War, Karlsruhe initially belonged to the French occupation zone. In July 1945 the French and Americans agreed on the final zone borders and Karlsruhe became part of the US zone of occupation. For this reason, the French occupying power established the new Baden Oberpostdirektion, initially intended as a branch in Freiburg . The staff came from Karlsruhe until the Americans stopped this in August 1945.

On June 30, 1999, the Karlsruhe directorate was officially dissolved. The successor organization "SNL (Service Niederlassung) Accounting PEL / I Karlsruhe" was integrated into the "SSC (Shared Service Center) Cologne" in the spring of 2002 and a large part of the tasks and the staff moved to the branch in Stuttgart.

The post office building on Ettlinger-Tor-Platz, in the southern part of Karlsruhe , which has not been used by the post since June 2002 , was built from 1934 to 1938 according to a design by Hermann Billing . It is an almost square-shaped building with an atrium and tower. Today there is a discotheque and a housing association.
