Oberpostdirektion Freiburg im Breisgau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oberpostdirektion Freiburg im Breisgau was from 1945 to 1989 as a regional central authority or administrative unit of the postal administration responsible for the administrative district of South Baden .

history

The Oberpostdirektion (OPD) in Freiburg im Breisgau was founded on July 21, 1945 by the French military government. It was initially a provisional branch of the Reichspostdirektion Karlsruhe, which had been in the American occupation zone since July 1945 . The OPD became independent relatively quickly, as the Americans prevented the transfer of personnel from Karlsruhe as early as August 1945. The president of the Reichspostdirektion Karlsruhe issued orders to all offices of the district in the French occupation zone in October 1945, after a meeting of the presidents of the OPD Freiburg and Tübingen in November 1945, the two-pronged authority to issue instructions ended.

In 1949/1950 the Oberpostdirektion was transferred from the state administration to the Deutsche Bundespost .

At the end of 1950, the OPD Freiburg comprised a total of 1,250 offices and offices with a workforce of 8,846: for the postal service 75 post offices, 139 branch post offices, 315 post offices I, 467 post offices II and 252 post offices as well as a telephone office, two telegraph construction offices, a telegraph equipment office, a post office (1945–1952), a post office savings bank (1947–1950) and a post office (1946–1955).

The workforce grew from 8,846 in 1950, through 11,197 (1960) and 12,781 (1970) to around 15,000 in 1975. In 1976 parts of the dissolved OPD Tübingen were added.

In the course of the privatization of the Bundespost, the Freiburg im Breisgau directorate of the Deutsche Bundespost Postdienst existed from 1990 to 1994 and the Freiburg im Breisgau directorate of Deutsche Post AG from 1995 to 1997. From 1994 Martin Spaeth was President of the Freiburg Directorate.

The Oberpostdirektion Freiburg had three locations in succession in the city: First the corps house of the Corps Suevia Freiburg , the so-called Schwabenhaus (Lessingstraße 14), later the former Karlskaserne at the Siegesdenkmal, and finally the new building at Berliner Allee 1 as a separate service building.

The intention of a new building was initially postponed again and again because it was uncertain at the time whether the OPD would even continue to exist as a separate authority. It was not until October 1968 that an architectural competition was announced. In March 1970, the jury decided on a design by the architect Alexander von Branca , and in July 1970 the Federal Post Office granted the building permit. Construction work began in May 1971, the foundation stone was laid one month later, and the topping-out ceremony was held in May 1973. The relocation of the offices began in December 1974, before the completion of the construction and the handover in March 1975. The office was closed in 1989 together with the other Oberpostdirektoren. The building on Berliner Allee now forms the Freiburg headquarters of Deutsche Telekom AG .

The square in front of the building below street level is named after Wolfgang Hoffmann , the mayor of Freiburg from 1945 to 1956 .
