history

Obletter at the Stachus in Munich

With the opening of the first shop on Marienplatz in Munich, Josef Obletter, whose family comes from Val Gardena in South Tyrol , founded the oldest and largest toy shop in Munich. Obletter was also a purveyor to the royal court. The company later moved to Karlsplatz, also popularly known as Stachus . There the company was spread over two houses.

The company was family-owned until about 1972 and at that time had the main store on Stachus, a branch in Munich- Schwabing and another on Marienplatz. Around this time the company was sold to Franz Carl Weber in Zurich . From then on, the company used the “red field with white rocking horse” logo instead of the original “teddy bear with ball”. This logo was given up in 1970 and the word mark “Obletter” was introduced. This logo was designed by the graphic artist Rudolf Schwarzbeck, Munich. The FCW Zurich company acquired several family businesses in Germany and also founded new businesses under the name Obletter.

The group of companies had around 30 retail stores when problems arose in 1984. Some stores were closed or sold. A smaller group with the main business on Stachus was continued by investors. This inventory was taken over in 1997 by the drugstore chain Müller from Ulm.

Purchase by Müller

Obletter has been part of the Müller Group since 1997 . Since most of the Müller shops also have their own toy departments, Müller began to close a large part of the Obletter branches after the takeover or to sell them on to small entrepreneurs. In numerous small towns there are toy stores with the name Obletter, but they have nothing to do with Müller.

On March 1, 2007, the last branch outside of Munich in downtown Nuremberg closed. Of the twelve branches that Müller took over, only the one at Stachus in Munich still exists today .

Today, Obletter am Stachus is primarily a popular shop. With around 16,000 items on two floors, Obletter continues to build on classic toys that are otherwise rarely found, such as rocking horses , wooden toys , board games , marionettes and steam engines .
