The Obwalden und Nidwalden Zeitung (short: ONZ ) was a local newspaper that appeared from February 2010 to March 2012 in the Swiss cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden .
founding
A first sample edition of the newspaper was distributed to all households in both cantons on February 19, 2010. Since April 23, 2010, the newspaper has been printed twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. In addition, the online edition was updated daily. This concept, known by ONZ as a “micro newspaper”, was taken over under license from Gossweiler Media AG , the publisher of the Jungfrau Zeitung .
The publisher was ONZ Obwalden und Nidwalden Zeitung AG in Stans, founded in 2009 . The founding shareholders were the Nidwaldner Volksblatt , founded in 1923, Gossweiler Media AG from Brienz and Obwalden entrepreneurs, such as Thomas Gasser, owner of Gasser Felstechnik in Lungern. In addition to the founding shareholders, 390 small shareholders were also involved. At the beginning of 2010, these responded to a call to subscribe for shares, so that the required start-up capital of 3 million Swiss francs was raised.
editorial staff
The seat of the publishing house and editorial office was in Alpnach . From its inception until August 2011, Francesco Welti was the editor-in-chief. Melk von Flüe headed the editorial team from September 2011 until the newspaper was closed.
attitude
The last edition of the newspaper appeared on March 2, 2012, and the newspaper ceased operations. Ordinary liquidation has been initiated for the company. The appointment was made for economic reasons. The targeted target of 4,000 subscribers in the first business year with an increase to 8,000 in the third business year could not be achieved. Instead, the number of subscribers stagnated at 3,000. The 17 ONZ employees lost their jobs. According to the newspaper's chairman of the board of directors , Thomas Gasser, the positive effect is that at least the rival newspaper Neue Obwaldner Zeitung has gotten better and has greatly expanded its range.
