Ox bile

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ox bile (Latin: Fel Tauri or Bilis Bovis ) is extracted from the bile of cattle, is greenish-yellow and powdery or liquid.

It serves as a wetting agent that increases the flow of paint on paper or parchment and helps degrease substrates. It is also used as a cleaning agent, e.g. B. in the form of gall soap .

It is also used occasionally for jaundice , gallstone disease, poor biliary secretion and diabetes. Ox bile is said to increase bile separation, intestinal absorption and intestinal movement. Ox bile inhibits the growth of gram-positive bacteria . It is therefore part of the TCBS agar , which is used for the selective reproduction of pathogens of the Vibrio genus . This effect is also used in the fight against the crown of thorns in the Australian barrier reef . A TCBS agar solution containing ox bile is injected into the starfish and leads to a fatal disease within a short time.
