Helmut Dähne (born November 29, 1944 in Altenmark ) is a German motorcycle racing driver . For many years he developed motorcycle tires for Metzeler . The trained car mechanic now works as a PR manager and lives in Munich .

Dähne has taken part in the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man 26 times and won the Production Class there in 1976 on a BMW R 90 S together with Hans-Otto Butenuth . It also holds the so-called all-time lap record for street-legal motorcycles on the version of the Nürburgring Nordschleife that has existed since 1983 , as no official competitions were held there after 1994.

Career

From 1965 to 1971 Dähne took part in off-road races and participated in motocross competitions. In 1968 he went as his first road race the Sudelfeld - mountain race (on a section of the German Alpine Road ), which he also won. In 1970 he won the BMW OMK Cup and from 1972 to 1986 he made 23 starts at the Isle of Man TT . In 1973 he won the first series DM title, in 1976 first place on the Isle of Man and the second series DM title, in 1977 the third and from 1980 to 1992 also the following up to the 24th series DM title. He narrowly missed further victories at the TT twice in the 1980s.

In 1988 he set a lap record on the Nürburgring- Nordschleife for the first time in so-called reliability drives (today: series sport ) , 7: 55.7 minutes with a Suzuki GSX-R . The entire 20.832 km lap was not completed, but started individually and standing (as in rallies) at the entry / exit at T13 and the time was stopped after the last right-hand bend to allow the vehicle to enter / exit. To be able to brake the exit. This lap is approx. 20.7 km long, the regulations require road-legal vehicles and tires. Dähne managed to undercut this record with a Honda RC30 in 1990 with 7: 53.08 minutes, in June 1992 to 7: 50.71 and in May 1993 to the "all time" record of 7: 49.71 minutes. The round was recreated in a video. These reliability runs were last carried out on the Nordschleife on July 2, 1994, in the absence of Dähne Herbert Mandelartz won with 7: 55.78 minutes.

In 1994 Helmut Dähne drove his 24th to 26th TT races, during which he fell and was suspended for a year because of his injuries. In 1996 he fell again but did not sustain any serious injuries. In 2001, after 26 participations, he won first place at 1000 km Hockenheim for the 18th time , in 2002 it was only enough for eleventh place in the series DM. After another accident in 2004 and several hospital stays, he did not start again.
