Octave Landuyt (born December 26, 1922 in Ghent , Belgium ) is a Belgian painter and sculptor . He is an important and versatile representative of Belgian abstract art after the Second World War .

Life

Octave Landuyt moved with his family to Eeklo in 1929 and to Kortrijk in 1931 . In Kortrijk he attended the local art academy and trained as a textile designer. The impressions of his youth and childhood from shipping traffic on the canals and the shipping industry shaped his artistic work, especially his metallic sculptures .

1954, the first is the Faculty for plastic arts in Belgium established. Landuyt becomes one of the first teachers at the Rijksnormaalschool in Ghent (today a department of the Hogeschool Ghent at the university). In 1965 he finally moved to Ghent, where he still lives and works today.

In the 1950s and 1960s, his art received international attention. In 1959 he was a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel in the painting department. In 1973 the city of Ghent organized a retrospective of his art in Ghent's Saint Peters Abbey .
