Ocypus nitens

Ocypus (Matidus) nitens ( syn. Ocypus nero , Ocypus similis ) is a beetle from the large family of the short-winged birds and the subfamily Staphylininae .

features

With a body length of 16 to 20 millimeters, the black beetles are among the larger members of their subfamily. They have strong mandibles . A dot-free center line runs over the pronounced pronotum, which is evenly, strongly and densely punctured. With its strongly convex head and pronotum , the species Ocypus nitens can be distinguished from the very similar short-winged Tasgius melanarius , which is built much flatter dorsoventrally .

Occurrence

The beetle species is found in the western Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. To the east, the distribution area extends over the Caucasus and Asia Minor to the Middle East (Iran). Ocypus nitens was introduced into North America . Since 1944 the beetle has been represented there on the north east coast of the United States from Maine to New York and in Canada ( Ontario ).

Way of life

The beetle species prefers moist habitats, for example in forests or swampy terrain. The beetles can be found under loose bark, leaves and moss as well as in detritus . The beetle is a follower of cultures and is often found near human settlements. It also gets along well in disturbed habitats .
