Ocypus ophthalmicus is a beetle from the family of the rophylinidae .

features

The beetles are 15–23 mm long. Head and neck shield are blue black, the elytra turquoise blue metal shimmering. The abdomen , legs and antennae are black. The 8th and 9th antennae are significantly longer than they are wide.

distribution

The beetle species is common in the Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe and is also found in England and Scandinavia. To the south, the occurrence extends to North Africa, to the east to the Middle East and to East Asia.

Way of life

The xerophilic beetle species prefers sandy mixed forests, heather and dry and semi-arid grasslands as habitats. The mainly nocturnal beetles feed predatory on worms, snails and small insects. They are observed from April to October. When in danger, the beetles raise their abdomen threateningly upwards.

The species was first described by Giovanni Antonio Scopoli in 1763 as Staphylinus ophthalmicus . The following additional synonyms can also be found in the literature :
