The Graubrustdrongo ( Dicrurus caerulescens , Syn. Lanius caerulescens; Balicassius caerulescens; Buchanga caerulescens ) is a species from the family of Drongos .

It occurs in India , Nepal and Sri Lanka .

The distribution area includes open dry to semi-humid deciduous and bamboo forests up to 2000 m height, in the vicinity of shady paths and clearings .

description

The gray-breasted drongo is about 34 cm tall and weighs 39 to 41 g. The upper side is glossy indigo in color, the underside brown-gray to white, the belly and lower wing covers are light white, while the chest and flanks are grayish to brown. The tail is shorter and forked a little less deeply than the gray drongo , the underside of the tail is white. The sexes do not differ. The forehead, reins and throat are black, the rest of the head is blue-gray to brown-gray. The iris is red-brown, the beak is black with a small hook and numerous hairs at the base. Fledglings are brown with white spots on the underside.

The call of the male is similar to that of the mourning drongo and is described as 3 - 4 finch-like or thrush-like, beautifully sounding, whistled tones. Numerous bird calls can be imitated.

Way of life

The food mainly consists of insects such as crickets , grasshoppers and moths , but also nectar from Butea, Salmalia and coral tree blossoms.

People like to hunt from a hide with graceful, skillful swoops for flying insects . The prey is grabbed with beak or claws and consumed on the hide. The gray breasted drongo is crepuscular and often part of a mixed hunting community.

The breeding season is between March and June, in Sri Lanka between February and June. Nest & eggs are like the king drongo , the nest is created in the open deciduous forest.

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
