The Odden Kirke is a church of the Danish People's Church on the Danish peninsula Sjællands Odde . It is located in the parish of Odden Sogn in the village of Overby in the municipality of Odsherred Municipality .

Architecture and history

It was built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries and was originally called Odbye Church or Odboe Church . Before that there was already a chapel in the area of today's Havnebyen, a little further north-west . The wealthier farmers of Overbys then campaigned for the building of their own church. Its strong red color, which has existed since 1874, is striking. It is believed that it also served as a navigation mark .

The pulpit dates from 1821 and bears a line of a poem Little Child, what harms you? of the theologian Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig , whose father was pastor at the church from 1766 to 1776. There is also an allegation that an older brother of Grundtvig was buried below the pulpit.

The altarpiece, painted on wood, dates from 1632. There is a for the king at the head of the Fourth Christian standing Monogram . Below is a representation of the ascending Christ I am the resurrection and the life . The crucifixion is shown in the middle part. Below the crucifixion is a skull that symbolizes Golgata and is marked with the sentence Whoever believes in me will live whether he dies soon . On the sides are the Virgin Mary and the young John. Another representation shows John the Baptist with the lamb. Moses with the ten commandments is depicted on the other side. The altar is made by the Daa and Parsberger families who live at Dragsholm Castle .

From the two-part baptismal font of the church it is assumed that the lower part originally comes from the old chapel and served there as a stoup .

Inside the church, a crucifix from the 14th century is also worth mentioning, which is located in the basement of the tower. Opposite the crucifix hangs the painting Christ in Prayer in Getsemane, which has belonged to the church since 1878 and which the painter Ziegler created in Rome .

The older of the two bells in the tower dates from the 15th century. The younger, larger one was created in 1599 and shows the coat of arms of Arild Huitfeldt . The Chancellor and historian was feudal lord at Dragsholm Castle at that time. An inscription announces that his trusted scribe Claus Mortensen had the bell cast at the expense of the church.

A memorial plaque commemorates a pastor's daughter who died in childbed in 1759 .

graveyard

In the cemetery surrounding the church is the tomb for the buried Danish lieutenant Peter Willemoes , whose ship Prinds Kristian was sunk by the British on March 22, 1808 off the coast of the peninsula, killing a total of 71 Danes. The memorial bears a poem by Grundtvig. Inside the church, a model of the ship created in 1914 commemorates the events. The model may have been made from a plank from the wreck. In the vestibule there are oak panels on which the names of those who fell in the sea battle are recorded.

There is also a memorial in the cemetery to three British pilots who were shot down in 1944 during the Second World War over Sejerø Bay , south of the church .
