Odendisastein

The Odendisastein (No. Vs 24; Swedish Odendisastenen - also Hassmyrastenen ) is a rune stone about 500 meters southwest of the Fläckebo Church near Sala in Västmanland in Sweden . The stone that, according to tradition, a farmer in Hassmyra found while plowing, is mentioned for the first time in the 17th century. Years later it broke in two, was repaired and placed in its present location in 1900.

The decoration consists of a serpentine ribbon with an Irish belt and a partially preserved outer serpentine ribbon. The stylistic creation in the center with the depiction of a snake and a large animal is a mixture of Ringerike and Urnes styles . The rune stone is one of the few that was erected for a woman.

Transliteration of the runic inscription (separator in the original as × ):

  • buonti: kuþr: hulmkoetr: lit: resa: ufteR: oþintisu: kunu: seno: kumbr: hifrya: til: hasuimura: iki betr: þon: byi raþr roþbalir: risti: runi: þisa: sikmuntaR: uaR. [...] sestR : kuþ

Normalized Old Norse:

Translation:

  • “The good landlord Holmgautr had it built after Odindisa, his wife. No better housewife will come to Hǫsumýrar to rule over the farm. Red Balli carved these runes. Sigmundr was good to his sister. "

Odendisa , runic oþintisu , is a female personal name, which is so far only documented here and is formed as a compound from the terms Óðin and Dísa with a mythological reference to the god name of Odin and the generic name of the Disen . The name of Holmgautr , runic hulmkoetr (here nominative), is otherwise only used as an accusative form in the inscription of the Runenhäll (rune plate) U 210 as hulmkut . Balle is a famous rune master (Swedish runristare) who was active around the Mälaren around 1050 AD .
