International Gamers Award 2003: nominated

Odins Raben (subtitle: "Flight for two weird birds") is a card game with tactical and luck elements for two people, published in 2002 by Kosmos as part of the series Games for Two . The author of the game is Thorsten Gimmler .

The game

action

The Nordic father of gods Odin sends his two ravens Hugin and Munin (in the game texts: Hugin and Mugin) every morning to explore the world and tell him about events in his realm.

Each player takes on the role of one of the two ravens. In the course of the game, both players must try to be the first to complete several flight stages in order to collect victory points . Whoever can collect 12 victory points first wins the game.

material

In addition to the instructions, the game material includes:

  • 112 vertical playing cards (40 landscape cards, 50 flight cards, 16 Odin cards, 6 “Magical Path” cards)
  • 2 raven figures
  • 1 Odin Stone

Course of the game

Each player plays with his own deck of cards, consisting of 25 flight cards and eight Odin cards, from which cards are drawn face down again and again.

The routes of both players are formed from the landscape cards. These cards are structured similar to dominoes and each show two types of landscape. When placed next to each other, they result in two parallel flight routes, one for each player. At the beginning the route consists of nine landscape cards, but it can be extended by the players as the game progresses.

It is the players' task to be the first to reach the end of their own flight path with their own character . To do this, both players take turns and may play up to three of their five cards in hand in one turn . In addition, a player can play up to three more cards from his own additional pile, but this is only formed in the course of the game.

The following actions are possible in one move:

  • Placing a card in hand on the additional pile: A player can put a card in hand on his face-down additional pile in order to be able to play it in a later round. The use of the additional pile is often of crucial importance, especially in the final phase.
  • Playing a flight card: Flight cards each show one of the five types of landscape and allow the player to move his figure over any number of fields of the corresponding landscape type.
  • Playing an Odin card: Odin cards are action cards that allow the player to carry out one of two actions printed on them, for example turning a landscape card or placing the Odin stone (a blockade for the opponent).
  • Placing a flight card on the “Magical Path”: The “Magical Path” is a special card that is laid out at the beginning of the game and shows two types of landscape. Players can place suitable flight cards there in order to receive additional victory points at the end of the game.
  • Playing the top card from the additional pile.

In his turn, a player can use up to three cards from his hand (play them or place them on the additional pile) and also play up to three cards from the additional pile. After the end of the turn, a player adds another five cards to his hand and can also extend the flight route with another landscape card.

A player wins a stage (game round) if he can place his pawn on the last card of the flight route during his turn. The stage winner credits the lead between his own and the opposing pawn as victory points. In addition, the player who has placed more cards on the “Magical Path” receives three victory points.

Further rounds are played until a player has accumulated 12 victory points, who then wins the game.
