Odontoscelis fuliginosa is a bug from the family of the shield bugs (Scutelleridae).

features

The bugs are 6.0 to 10.0 millimeters long. Their body is covered with dark brown hair and they lack the bandages with silvery hairs typical of Odontoscelis lineola . The similar species is also a bit smaller. They are very variable in their color and body size. In the north and at higher altitudes they tend to be smaller and often lighter in color.

distribution and habitat

The species is widespread in the Palearctic and occurs from the Mediterranean to southern Scandinavia. In the east, their distribution extends to Central Asia and also to India. It is common in Central Europe, but it is rare in the northwest and absent in many parts. In the east and south of Central Europe, however, it is common in places. They can be found in the Alps up to over 2000 meters above sea level. Dry and warm, open habitats with little vegetation and different soil conditions are settled.

Way of life

The animals live under different types of plants and are apparently polyphagous . They are often found on legumes (Fabaceae) such as clover ( Trifolium ) and snail clover ( Medicago ). Very rarely do they climb the plants in hot weather. In sandy soils, both can imagines , and the nymphs dig and then suck at the roots of food crops. The nymphs usually overwinter in the fourth instar. The first adults appear from May and mate and lay eggs in June and July. The new generation nymphs appear quite soon afterwards; the adult animals of the new generation can be found until August, rarely also in early September.
