Odontoscelis lineola is a bug from the family of the shield bugs (Scutelleridae).
features
The bugs are 4.5 to 6.5 millimeters long. Along the pronotum and the scutellum, their body wears characteristic bands with silvery hairs, which distinguish the species from the similar Odontoscelis fuliginosa . The remaining parts of the dorsal side of the animals are covered with dark hairs.
distribution and habitat
The species is distributed from the northern Mediterranean to the south of Scandinavia. It occurs everywhere in Germany, but is only occasionally more common locally. In Austria it is only known from Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria and is rare. Like Odontoscelis fuliginosa, it inhabits dry and warm, open habitats with little vegetation, but there is a stronger connection to sandy soils with sparse vegetation, such as silver grass corridors .
Way of life
Like Odontoscelis fuliginosa , the animals live under different plant species and are apparently polyphagous . They are often found on legumes (Fabaceae) such as clover ( Trifolium ) and snail clover ( Medicago ). The nymphs hibernate. The first adults appear from May and mate and lay eggs in June and July. The new generation nymphs appear quite soon afterwards; the adult animals of the new generation can be found until August, rarely also in early September.
