Glacier measuring service

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The glacier measurement service organizes the glacier research of the Austrian Alpine Association . The focus is on length observations on approx. 200 Austrian glaciers by approx. 20 voluntary observers. The annual PES glacier report is particularly popular with the general public . The data is stored in the Alpine Club archive. There, the glacier service also collects other sources that are informative for glacier research, for example historical paintings, texts and photos from which conclusions can be drawn about earlier glacier positions. The now very long series of measurements that document the loss of length of the glaciers is particularly interesting. The glacier measurement service has been headed by Gerhard Lieb and Andreas Kellerer-Pirklbauer, both scientists at the Institute for Geography and Spatial Research at the University of Graz , since 2016 .

history

Glacier research in the Alpine Association began in 1891 with an appeal by the scientific advisory board of the then DuOeAV to participate in the glacier measurements that Eduard Richter carried out on the impulse of François-Alphonse Forels from 1890. Raimund von Klebelsberg (director 1918–1964) introduced the annual publication of a glacier report in 1927. His successor was Hans Kinzl until 1979 . 1981–2009 the service was headed by Gernot Patzelt and from 2009 to 2016 by Andrea Fischer .
