Gernot Patzelt

Gernot Patzelt (* 1939 ) is an Austrian geographer , high mountain researcher and polar researcher .

Life

Gernot Patzelt received his doctorate in 1968 with the work Die Gletscher der Venedigergruppe under Hans Kinzl at the University of Innsbruck and subsequently worked as an assistant at the local institute for meteorology and geophysics and at the geographic institute. He completed his habilitation in 1979 and was head of the Research Institute for High Mountain Research from 1980 to 1999 and at the same time head of the Alpine Research Center in Obergurgl in Tyrol . Between 1994 and 1996 he was head of the Institute for Geography and since 1999 head of the Institute for High Mountain Research and Alpine Agriculture and Forestry. From his appointment as professor in 1992 until his retirement in 2004, he represented the subject of high mountain research at the University of Innsbruck.

Research work

Patzelt conducts research on climate history and landscape development, especially in the Alpine region . From 1981 to 2009 he headed the glacier measurement service of the Austrian Alpine Club .

Gernot Patzelt was also involved in research on the “ Ötzi ” find. On September 25, 1991, shortly after the glacier mummy was discovered, he was there to find and recover the quiver with 12 arrows. In the following years he examined the climatic conditions that contributed to the exceptionally good preservation of the mummy.

Statements on climate change

In 2007 Patzelt admitted an anthropogenic influence on global warming , but warned against "jumping to conclusions": "What has happened so far is astonishingly undramatic - the catastrophe has so far only taken place on the computer." His investigations on ice cores and lake deposits in high valleys would suggest that warm phases such as the current 12,000 years were nothing unusual. His paper The post-glacial climate development in the Alps compared to the temperature development of the present appeared in 2014 in the series of publications of the European Institute for Climate and Energy , a climate change denial association. After 2010, Patzelt was a member of the EIKE advisory board for several years

Antarctic expeditions

Patzelt took part in five Antarctic expeditions to western Dronning Maud Land , three of which he led. Among other things, he researched the glaciological conditions in the vicinity of the EPICA drilling location and looked for traces of the permocarbon glaciation around 300 million years ago in Heimefrontfjella . In addition, he worked with the Alfred Wegener Institute from 1983 to 2002 and trained the winterers at the German Georg von Neumayer Station .

A nunatak in Heimefrontfjella was named Patzeltsporn in 2010 .
