The European Institute for Climate & Energy e. V. ( EIKE e.V. ) is a registered association that rejects the scientific consensus that global warming is man-made. The association sees its task in "presenting climate and energy facts free of ideology, organizing congresses and disseminating publications on climate research". Contrary to its name, EIKE is not a scientific institute . Voices from science and the press describe the association as the center of the politically active and organized climate denial scene in Germany. His aim is to carry out the systematic attack on the findings of climate science .

EIKE is connected to lobbying for the denial of man-made global warming in the USA through the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow , among other things . EIKE is accused of pretending to be scientific, deliberately spreading disinformation and influencing political parties. The responsible persons are not climate researchers, but according to their own statements among other things natural scientists, humanities and economists, engineers, publicists and politicians; many of them are retired. Some publications by club members appeared in predatory journals , but are advertised on the website as peer-reviewed ( i.e. checked by scientific quality assurance). A disclosure of the financing of the association or the income of the members does not take place.

EIKE now shapes the climate policy of the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

structure

Organizationally, the non-profit association consists of a board of directors and several other active members. The association gives an address in Jena as the “office” . According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung (2010) and Die Zeit (2012), the association has no office. The TV presenter and astrophysicist Harald Lesch said in 2017 that when he tried to contact the association, he only found a mailbox at the headquarters. The chairman of the association denied this. The number of members is given by the association as around 50. Most of them say they are retired . Many members are politicians or come from business, only some from science.

Principles of the association

EIKE is an organization of climate deniers who reject the scientific consensus on man-made global warming . The members describe themselves as “climate realists” or “climate skeptics” and deny man-made climate change in the political climate controversy or consider its consequences to be nonexistent, irrelevant or positive.

EIKE describes itself as "an association of a growing number of nature, humanities and economists, engineers, publicists and politicians who see the claim of" man-made climate change "as not scientifically justifiable and therefore as a hoax towards the population". The association rejects any climate policy : This is a "pretext" to "patronize the economy and the population and to burden the people with taxes". EIKE regards itself as "a platform for the discussion and publication of scientific findings", which among other things prepares "expert reports on its own and external orders", "participates in the education and clarification of the population" and "sets up political initiatives by providing scientific information Expertise "supported. The members work for EIKE according to their self-portrayal "exclusively in the sense of an independent, neutral finding of truth". "[Any] kind of influence" from "business organizations or corresponding lobby associations [..] is basically excluded".

The motto on the association's website is “Not the climate is threatened, but our freedom! Environmental protection: yes! Climate protection: no ". The website identifies EIKE as a proponent of nuclear energy through a large number of articles . The policy paper calls for an end to “nuclear energy discrimination”.

Foundation and leadership

The association was founded in 2007 in Hanover by Holger Thuß (* 1969), who continues to lead it to this day. The association was initially registered at Thuss's private address in Jena. Thuss, who has a doctorate in history, was the deputy federal chairman of the Ring of Christian Democratic Students (RCDS) in the 1990s and is a member of the CDU . Thuss is a partner in TvR Medienverlag , but also publishes with peculiarly free , a libertarian magazine with overlaps on the New Right. Michael Limburg (* 1940) is the deputy chairman .

Funding and liaison with other organizations

EIKE works closely with various climate denial organizations and is considered to be well networked in the international climate denial scene. There are close ties to major US climate change deniers, including CFACT and the Heartland Institute .

EIKE e. V. claims that it does not receive any money from corporations itself and claims that it is financed exclusively by small private donors and its own members. However, as a legal person , CFACT Europe is also a founding member of EIKE e. V. A disclosure of the financing of the association or the association's work does not take place.

According to James Taylor of the Heartland Institute , which makes payments to EIKE and with whom EIKE says there are “good relationships”, EIKE has a budget of around 200,000 euros. When asked about the budget, EIKE stated that their “donation volume” per year was “well below the stated amount”. Overall, the association has "almost only small and very small donors".

CFACT

EIKE founder Thuss is also the founder and chairman of CFACT Europe, a European branch of the climate denial organization CFACT. CFACT is one of the most important organizations of the organized climate denial movement worldwide, based in the USA. Thuss already worked before EIKE e. V. for CFACT and from there, according to their own information, brought the idea for EIKE e. V. with. EIKE, CFACT Europe and TvR Medienverlag operated by Thuss share the same PO box in Jena. The Vice President, Michael Limburg, is also a member of the “Expert Committee” of CFACT Europe.

CFACT and CFACT Europe are financed by corporations. Between 1998 and 2007, CFACT received donations from the ExxonMobil Foundation and oil company ExxonMobil totaling $ 582,000. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the CFACT 2008 was one of the largest recipients of donations from the oil company ExxonMobil, with almost $ 600,000. According to a Reuters article in 2008, the group had announced that it would no longer fund the CFACT from this year onwards, but in fact the group spent at least another 6.5 million dollars in the period from 2008 to 2015 to support various climate denial organizations. CFACT also receives much of its funding from the Donors Trust . The Trust aims to support climate-skeptical organizations around the world as anonymously as possible. The Donors Trust is financed by Koch Industries , among others .

In an interview with the ARD magazine Monitor in 2018, the press spokesman for the association Horst-Joachim Lüdecke claimed not to know CFACT, CFACT-Europe and the Heartland Institute. In a publication in Lüdeck, however, an email address from CFACT Europe is given as the contact address. Holger Thuss did not want to accept a written request about the contacts and connections between the organizations.

Heartland Institute

The association maintains close relationships with the Heartland Institute, with which it also organizes joint conferences. In addition, the Heartland Institute supports EIKE in organizing its own conferences and lists EIKE founder Holger Thuss on its website as an environmental expert. Wolfgang Müller from EIKE called the Heartland Institute a role model in his fight against "climate madness", while Spiegel Online presented the organization as a kind of "big brother" of EIKE. Research describes it as a conservative think tank that is one of the key players in the organized climate change denial scene. The Heartland Institute u. a. from ExxonMobil, and it received $ 8.6 million from an anonymous donor specifically for the purpose of attacking climate research . In 2019, Heartland and EIKE organized a conference called "Climate Reality Forum" as part of the climate conference in Madrid , which aimed at how the world could defend itself against "climate alarmism" and "climate madness". Among other things, the then 19-year-old Naomi Seibt , a German blogger and Youtuber who u. a. became known for their sharply articulated positioning against, among other things, the "state media", abortion and sea rescue , which now also denies climate change.

More connections

There are other personal connections to the US climate denial organization CO2 Coalition , which claims that high carbon dioxide emissions are good for the earth, and which in turn is close to Donald Trump . EIKE Secretary General Wolfgang Müller is responsible for the CFACT Climate Change Program and is also on the board of the libertarian Berlin Manhattan Institute (today the Institute for Entrepreneurial Freedom ). Charles B. Blankart , who sits on the board, said EIKE and the Institute for Entrepreneurial Freedom were "almost the same".

Connections to the AfD

There are close links in terms of content and personnel between EIKE and Alternative für Deutschland (AfD).

Michael Limburg joined the AfD and (according to a representation on the EIKE e.V. website, as of January 2014), as deputy chairman of the Federal Energy Committee, helps shape the party's energy and climate policy. He also works part-time in the parliamentary office of Karsten Hilse (AfD), who is considered by the taz to be the “most radical denier of man-made climate change” in the Bundestag. In an interview in March 2017, Limburg said that he had advised the party on a voluntary basis. The AfD included large parts of its views on climatology in its program. In the federal election in 2017, Limburg ran for AfD Brandenburg in tenth place on the state list for a seat in the Bundestag. In 2018 Limburg was also invited by the AfD parliamentary group of the Brandenburg state parliament to testify as an "expert" before the state parliament. There Limburg u. a., there is no evidence "that man-made CO 2 in any mysterious way warms the temperature of the atmosphere of this planet". At the invitation of the AfD regional association of Thuringia, Michael Limburg gave a lecture in Erfurt in 2014 with the title “Climate change & the energy transition - How trillions are burned with myths”.

Horst-Joachim Lüdecke is also an AfD member and has been invited as an expert by the AfD many times. Among other things, he gave lectures at the AfD in Mannheim, Bad Schönborn and Leutershausen in 2014.

Günter Keil, author of the publication “The energy transition has already failed”, published by EIKE e. V., also joined the AfD and is a member of the Federal Energy Commission (as of July 2013). Burkard Reimer, who, together with Günter Keil and Michael Limburg, wrote an “energy policy manifesto” at EIKE e. V., also joined the AfD and is a member of the Federal Energy Committee.

Horst-Joachim Lüdecke, Friedrich-Karl Ewert, Helmut Kuntz, Klaus Dieter Humpich, Wolfgang Thüne and Fred F. Mueller publish articles on EIKE e. V and the AfD-related blog Die Freie Welt, published by Sven von Storch .

EIKE Vice President Michael Limburg, on the other hand, describes EIKE as "close to the CSU SME Union".

Advisory Board

EIKE e. V. names members of an "advisory board" on its website. “Leading scientists” would “make a decisive contribution” to “ensuring that the educational content of EIKE is always based on the latest scientific findings”. As of December 2016, of these 23 professors or doctors, five had already died and eleven had retired.

Press spokesman and advisory board member Horst-Joachim Lüdecke (* 1943, physicist for fluid mechanics and professor emeritus at the Saarland University of Technology and Economics ) was quoted as saying in 2010: “We don't need climate researchers”. There is no scientific evidence that CO 2 heats the atmosphere. Therefore, according to Lüdecke, it is also legitimate that the advisory board u. a. a materials researcher, a radiologist and an electronics specialist were also seated.

As of 2020, the Advisory Board is next Liidecke from Dieter Ameling (* 1941, former President of the German Steel Federation and Chairman of the Steel Institute VDEh ), Nils-Axel Mörner (* 1938, oceanographer ret.) Helmut Alt (professor of electrical and Informationstechnik ret.), Richard S. Courtney (member of the editorial board of the magazine Energy & Environment), Friedrich-Karl Ewert (professor of geology, University of Paderborn ret .), Edgar Ludwig Gärtner (ecologist), Hans Jelbring ( Climatologist, Stockholm), Hans HJ Labohm ( retired economist and journalist) and Horst Malberg (meteorologist, FU Berlin, retired )

Former members included a. Klaus Landfried (* 1941, died 2014, political scientist and former President of the University Rectors' Conference), Gernot Patzelt (* 1939, glaciologist and polar researcher), Ian Plimer (* 1946, geologist and mining entrepreneur), Christopher Monckton (* 1952, politician, UKIP ) and Gerhard Hosemann (born 1922, died 2016, communications engineer).

activities

EIKE operates a blog and a Twitter account, on which, according to Spiegel Online , news is posted almost every day, which mainly consists of many photo montages and shrill headlines. These posts are then often shared in groups on Facebook and discussed and thus disseminated. On the website EIKE explains that climate policy is a pretext for politicians to patronize the economy and the population and to tax the population. In addition, hatred is stoked there against the demonstrations organized by Fridays for Future and in particular Greta Thunberg .

Since its foundation, the association has also organized regular so-called “climate conferences” (the exact names vary, e.g. 2010: “Third International Climate and Energy Conference”). The conference in August 2008 with the title “Climate change - is man really to blame and what should be done?” Was co-organized by parts of the Berlin FDP around Henner Schmidt , Mieke Senftleben and Dietmar Ufer. The fourth international conference on climate and energy took place in Munich in 2011. The eighth conference took place in Frankfurt in October 2014. The conferences are jointly organized by EIKE e. V., CFACT and CFACT Europe organized and financed. At the tenth conference in 2016, the then CDU-MdB and EIKE advocate Philipp Lengsfeld spoke the greeting. The association advertised this conference with an advertisement in the Burschenschaftliche Blätter , which is part of the spectrum of political rights .

In this context as well as in other campaigns (press campaigns, petitions), EIKE u. a. with Werner Kirstein , Hans Labohm , Benny Peiser , Fred Singer , Henrik Svensmark , Wolfgang Thüne , Nir Shaviv , Jan Veizer , Christopher Monckton and Marc Morano and by the Nuclear Society funded association Citizens for technology e. V. together. Helmut Alt, member of the EIKE advisory board, is one of the citizens' most active employees for technology in the commitment against the energy transition and renewable energies as well as for nuclear energy. There was also a collaboration with part of the former FDP parliamentary group around Paul Friedhoff , the “Liberal Institute” of the FDP-affiliated Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and the libertarian Berlin Manhattan Institute (formerly the Institute for Entrepreneurial Freedom ).

After the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic , EIKE, like many other climate deniers, began writing on the subject and spreading conspiracy theories on the subject . According to Bernhard Pötter , there have since been "a lot of entries on EIKE that portray the corona policy with sometimes confused conspiracy theories as false, unscientific and dangerous." The reason why climate deniers often reject both climate protection and protection against the corona virus, is, according to Bob Ward , who researches science denial, that they represent a worldview in which "government influence on people's lives" is generally rejected. The Correctiv research center also stated in May 2020 that EIKE had "been fueling skepticism about the dangerousness of the Covid19 virus for weeks" and was trying to show "how 'foolish' the political reaction to the corona virus" was. The common narrative here is that state regulation threatens personal freedom, a story that connects (also) climate deniers and market radicals.

Publications

The association presents articles on the topics of climate and energy on its website in particular. Some of the contributions come from the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) network and have been translated from English. In addition to a number of regular authors, guest authors such as the cultural scientist Benny Peiser , the journalists Michael Miersch , Dirk Maxeiner and Lawrence Solomon , the cabaret artist Vince Ebert , the conspiracy theorist Gerhard Wisnewski and the physicist and lobbyist Fred Singer also publish there .

In March 2016, EIKE e. V. in an article on an English-language satire website, translated it into German and published it at EIKE e. V. website. The article alleged that Edward Snowden was in possession of documents showing that the CIA invented climate change. EIKE e. V. admitted that it had taken over the content without checking it and took the report off the website.

EIKE e. V. advertises on its website with supposedly scientific works written by association members. The association claims that these publications, as is usual in science, have been checked by external scientists, and consequently explicitly describes these works as peer-reviewed . However, some of these publications have been shown to have been published by unscientific predatory journals. Among other things, Horst-Joachim Lüdecke , press spokesman for EIKE, published a work in 2016 in the fake magazine "Journal of Geography, Environment and Earth Science International". In 2018, journalists from the Süddeutsche Zeitung, who examined the quality of this magazine and its review process, succeeded in placing a nonsense article written by a computer program in it. The supposed reviewers of the journal would have suggested only a few changes, then accepted the article. Both the publisher and Lüdecke deny that the magazine is a fake journal. Lüdecke emphasizes that the peer review was "very tidy" and also highlighted the handling as "unusually polite, fair, factual and nice". Jochem Marotzke , Director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology , on the other hand, stated that “just to publish such a work in this journal would mean a ban by the Max Planck Institute for any scientist”. When asked specifically about the Lüdecke paper, he explained that it did not meet “the very lowest scientific standards”.

reception

The communication strategies and the network of “climate-skeptical” groups such as EIKE e. V. are the subject of scientific research. In the professional world, EIKE e. V. both as disinformation be operated front organization considered that under misleading names their lobbying operates, as well as climate deniers group that specifically mimics science. EIKE is in this context with organizations such as Friends of Science and Lavoisier Group , mainly engaged in English-speaking countries made are active in a line of tradition with many PR agencies in the tobacco industry, the scientific consensus on the health hazards of decades tobacco smoke put into question . EIKE is accused of being the "reservoir for deniers of man-made climate change" and of "systematically attacking the findings of established climate science". In addition, EIKE is described as the organization that "has been organizing the small scene of climate change deniers [in Germany] for years". The political scientist Miranda Schreurs calls EIKE a "climate change-denying lobby organization" [...] which despite its name has a post office box but no office, does no research and has only a few dozen members ".

The assertions of the association are seen by scientists like Jörg Matschullat as false statements and "pawn catcher arguments". In addition, Matschullat points out that the responsible persons of the association have "no connection of their own to climate research". Michael Brüggemann characterizes the EIKE approach as a targeted imitation of scientific processes and refers in this context to the organization of conferences, the publication of books and the provision of alternative "experts" . Wolfgang Schweiger , professor of communication science at the University of Hohenheim , describes EIKE in a publication on disinformation in social media as an “institution” that “denies climate change with questionable studies and falsified data”.

Some climate researchers reacted to the arguments put forward by founding member EG Beck with a critical statement. During a visit by representatives of EIKE to the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in April 2011, its director, Hans Joachim Schellnhuber , commented on the climate-skeptical positions of EIKE and contradicted the arguments put forward in seven subject areas on the basis of specialist literature sources. Heidelberg University writes in a press release that EIKE e. V. repeatedly misleads the public in the debate about climate change with extreme and factually untenable standpoints. The arguments on the part of the association would also contradict physical laws.

The climatologist Hans von Storch , who attended two meetings of the climate skeptic scene in Germany, commented on the events with the words “The level was mostly catastrophic” and “There was no real interest in a discussion”. Patrick Illinger , head of the “Knowledge” section of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, wrote about the “4th edition” organized jointly by EIKE and the Berlin Manhattan Institute in late 2011 . International Conference on Climate and Energy ": This event is not about skepticism, it is about tough denial, about the categorical denial of any scientific knowledge that links man-made greenhouse gas with global warming. There is also a noticeable amount of anger involved. Anger at the IPCC, at Al Gore, at politics and especially at the compliant media. "It should be" nothing less than a global conspiracy [...] to be revealed. Climate change is to be exposed as a huge lie, to avert an impending green-socialist world dictatorship and to redeem humanity from the gloomy scenarios of the IPCC. Anyone who shares this request can speak here. Apparently without regard to scientific content. ”According to Spiegel Online, EIKE seems to“ only produce simple propaganda on the assembly line ”.

The association was accused of lobbying from various sides. For example, the online edition of the Frankfurter Rundschau describes him as the spearhead of climate-skeptical lobbyism in Germany, while the association members are described in an article in the world as climate revisionists. According to an article in the weekly Die Zeit , the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) and the Heartland Institute are part of an "industry-funded complex of associations and institutes that has grown around Washington." These are "paid experts who serve the interests of their clients." In addition, there are other organizations such as the American Enterprise Institute, the Marshall Institute, the Frontiers of Freedom Institute or the Independent Institute, which operate with the same methods. In this case, the time on personal, substantive and methodological links between EIKE e. V. and the named organizations.

In connection with the connections between AfD and EIKE, the climate scientist Stefan Rahmstorf points out that the AfD “recycled ancient arguments from Exxon Mobile from the 80s” in the federal election campaign, which have long been refuted.

Nicole Weinhold, editor-in-chief of Renewable Energies. The magazine characterized EIKE as an " association of AfD members, climate deniers and wind power haters with the reputable name of the European Institute for Climate and Energy (Eike)" and warned in this context of the negative consequences of conducting fake studies with nonsensical results on society.
