Patrick Illinger

Patrick Illinger (born July 26, 1965 in Munich ) is a German science journalist . Since 2002 he has headed the "Knowledge" section of the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

Life

Patrick Illinger studied physics and theater studies in Munich. He then worked as a research assistant at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich at the European Research Center CERN near Geneva . There he received his doctorate in 1994 on antimatter . He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the RCOM Research Center in Bremen .

Illinger completed a radio and television traineeship at Bayerischer Rundfunk . There he made a documentary about the Bosnian war , among other things . He then worked for two years as an editor for research and technology at Focus magazine . He also worked as a science journalist for Die Zeit and the Berliner Zeitung, among others .

Illinger has been working for the Süddeutsche Zeitung since 1997, where he was initially responsible for computer and technology issues. From 1999 to 2001 he set up the online presence of the Süddeutsche Zeitung as editor-in-chief. Since 2002 he has been head of the “Knowledge” department. In addition, from 2004 to 2008 he was the editor of the knowledge magazine SZ Wissen of the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

In 2007 he received the Werner and Inge Grüter Prize for Science Education .

In 2019, he was awarded the German Reporter Prize as co-author of the report "Wishful thinking" published in SZ-Magazin .

Illinger is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Munich Re Foundation and a member of the text jury for the Punkt journalist award .

He moderated various science policy events, including the Leopoldina Workshop 2012 on sustainability in science (participants including Klaus Töpfer and Hans-Joachim Schellnhuber ), the Leopoldina discussion on predictive genetic diagnostics (participants including Peter Propping ) and the panel discussion of the ERES 2006 Foundation for Climate Change (participants including Stefan Rahmstorf ).

In March 2020 Patrick Illinger will publish the thriller "QUANTUM - Tödliche Materie" with dtv-Verlag.
