Werner and Inge Grüter-Prize for science communication
The Werner and Inge Grüter Prize for Science Communication has been awarded annually by the Werner and Inge Grüter Foundation since 1996 for certain scientific publications in the German-speaking area that both present excellent work in the natural sciences and aim to bring scientific results to a wider public to make known. Scientific journalistic topics from the disciplines of evolution , marine biology , botany , paleontology and cosmology are preferred .
The Werner and Inge Grüter Foundation
The Werner and Inge Grüter Foundation was founded in 1994 by the neurologist and psychiatrist Werner Grüter (1929–2014) and his wife, the pharmacist Inge Grüter, under the umbrella of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft . The foundation was set up under private law , is recognized as a non-profit organization and is based in Munich . The management of the foundation has now been transferred to Maecenata Management GmbH in Munich , a service provider for non-profit associations and foundations.
The purpose of the foundation is to promote science and research as well as education in the natural sciences. The aim of the funding is that science and research spread beyond the boundaries of their respective disciplines, whereby the areas of biology (with a focus on evolution, marine biology and botany), paleontology and cosmology should be given preference.
The foundation achieves its purpose in particular through:
- Awarding of prizes for publications in the German-speaking area that correspond to the purpose of the foundation
- Granting of scholarships to German citizens
- Raising funds to promote science, research and education
The foundation is supported by a scientific advisory board made up of the following people: Werner Grüter (founder and chairman), Reinhold Leinfelder (deputy chairman), Jürke Grau and Gerhard Haszprunar .
The award for science communication
The Werner and Inge Grüter Prize for Science Communication , which is announced annually by the Foundation, was initially endowed with prize money of 20,000 DM , today the prize money is 10,000 euros . The prize is awarded for work from the German-speaking area.
Both personal applications and suggestions from third parties are possible, with applications from younger scientists being particularly welcome. Contributions of all forms are accepted, such as books , articles in print media , radio and television programs and contributions on the Internet . Purely scientific publications cannot be taken into account, as the award is intended to promote and recognize in particular the communication of science - beyond the boundaries of its respective disciplines - to a broader public.
The Foundation's Advisory Board decides on the award of the prize. The "renowned [...] 'Werner and Inge Grüter Prize for Science Journalism'" is awarded publicly at a ceremony, usually combined with a specialist lecture by the awardee (s). The award can also be split, which was the case six times between 1996 and 2010 with a total of 13 awards. In 2002 and 2003, no prizes were awarded for internal reasons.
