Peter Wellnhofer

Peter Wellnhofer (* 1936 in Munich ) is a German paleontologist . He is considered one of the world's leading experts on pterosaurs (Pterosauria) and the "first bird" Archeopteryx .

life and work

Peter Wellhofer is graduate geologist and in 1964 at the Munich Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Dr. rer. nat. PhD. He then took a position as a curator at the Bavarian State Collection for Paleontology and Geology . As part of this activity, he was responsible for collecting fossil vertebrate animals . He later became chief curator and deputy director of the State Collection. During this time, Wellnhofer's research activities focused on the pterosaurs of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods , the "primeval bird" Archeopteryx and the dinosaurs . His works include, in addition to the volume Pterosauria , in the Handbuch der Paläoherpetologie / Handbook of paleoherpetology published by him and numerous specialist publications, a series of publications on pterosaurs and Archeopteryx intended for the general public .

Awards

In 1997 Wellnhofer was awarded the Werner and Inge Grüter Prize for Science Education .

In 2018 Wellnhofer received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
