Clifford Earle

Clifford John Earle Junior (born November 3, 1935 in Racine , Wisconsin , † June 12, 2017 in Ithaca , New York ) was an American mathematician who studied function theory .

life and work

Earle studied at Swarthmore College with a bachelor's degree in 1957 and at Harvard University with a master's degree in 1958 and a doctorate with Lars Ahlfors in 1962 ( Teichmüller Spaces of Groups of the Second Kind ). From 1963 to 1965 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . In 1965 he became an assistant professor and in 1969 a professor at Cornell University . From 1976 to 1979 he was head of the faculty.

He dealt with Teichmüller rooms (modular rooms of the Riemann area ) and the associated theory of quasi-conformant images (according to Ahlfors, Bers) and Kleinscher groups.

With James Eells in 1967 he also described the homotopy types of the spaces of diffeomorphisms of compact surfaces X and thus a new characterization of the Teichmüller spaces of X.

In 1974/75 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . He was a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

He had been married since 1960 and had two children.
