Irwin Kra (born January 5, 1937 in Poland ) is an American mathematician who deals with function theory (complex analysis).

Kra studied at Brooklyn Polytech (bachelor's degree in 1960) and at Columbia University , where he received his master's degree in 1964 and his PhD in 1966 with Lipman Bers (Conformal Structure and Algebraic Structure). He was then a Moore Instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1966 to 1968 and then at the State University of New York at Stony Brook , where he headed the Mathematics Faculty from 1975 to 1981. From 1991 to 1996 he was Dean of the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics there. Since 2004 he has been Professor Emeritus there. He was visiting professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (where he worked with Hershel M. Farkas), the University of Perugia , in Santiago de Chile , the University of Tōhoku , the Fudan University in Shanghai (1987). From 2004 to 2008 he was the founding director of Math for America, a private organization devoted to improving college education in mathematics in the United States. He lives in Setauket (New York). In 2010 he taught at Northwestern University .

Kra deals with Riemann surfaces and their modular spaces ( Teichmüller spaces ) and, related to this, with Klein groups and associated automorphic forms as well as their applications, for example in number theory.

From 1972 to 1973 he was a Guggenheim Fellow. He was on the council of the American Mathematical Society , whose proceedings he edited. From 2004 to 2008 he was the founding director of an initiative to improve high school math teaching in the United States (Math for America).

With Bernard Maskit , he published the collected works of Lipman Bers on function theory in 1998.

He is married and has three children. His daughter, Bryna Kra, is a math professor at Northwestern University.
