Bernard Maskit (born May 27, 1935 in New York City ) is an American mathematician who deals with function theory.

Maskit received his PhD in 1964 under Lipman Bers at New York University ( On Klein's Combination Theorem ). From 1963 to 1965 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study . From 1965 to 1972 he was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . He has been a professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNY) since 1971 .

Maskit introduced a complex-analytical structure named after him in the Teichmüller area of Riemannian surfaces and dealt with Klein's groups. The Maskit combination set (also known as the Klein Maskit combination set) is named after him . This gives conditions for when the amalgamated product or the HNN extension of discrete groups of hyperbolic isometries are discrete again.

He was co-editor of Lipman Bers' Collected Works .

In 1970/71 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 1974 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Vancouver (Classification of Kleinian Groups). He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
