Marc Morano (* 1968 in Washington, DC ) is an American conservative publicist : Among other things, he runs the blog Climate Depot for the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT), a front group that is counted among the most important organizations of the organized climate denial movement . Morano is considered the most aggressive member of the American climate denial scene and is counted among the most famous climate change deniers in the world.

Life

Morano grew up in McLean , Virginia and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from George Mason University . From 1992 to 1996 he worked for Rush Limbaugh and was considered its "man in Washington". He played a key role in the campaign against Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry during the 2004 US presidential election . He then worked for Republican Senator James Inhofe before finally setting up his blog ClimateDepot. Later he also took over the management of the communications department of CFACT , a conservative think tank that is financed, among other things, by the oil industry. Morano has no scientific training or expertise in climate issues, he describes himself as a "warrior" in the wars over the climate.

Act

In 2000 he claimed in a TV report he produced called Amazon Rainforest: Clear-Cutting the Myths , citing the former greenpeaceactivist Patrick Moore , that the tropical rainforest in the Amazon basin is by no means threatened by deforestation , as environmentalists claim .

From 2001 to 2006 Morano was a reporter for the Cybercast News Service (CNS) of the Media Research Center . In 2004, CNS and Morano brought the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth campaign to the wider public during the 2004 presidential election against John Kerry , Democratic presidential candidate . In January 2006 there was a similar action against the Vietnam veteran John Murtha .

From 2006 to 2009, he served as the Republican PR director on the Committee on Environment and Public Works for Senator James Inhofe . In December 2006, he began blogging on the Congress Committee website. A report he co-authored, Over 400 Prominent Scientists Disputed Man-Made Global Warming Claims, which was published in 2007 and listed more than 400 scientists who allegedly denied anthropogenic global warming, caused a sensation. Critics pointed out that the list included 44 weather announcers, 84 industrial grant recipients, and 70 people unrelated to climate science. Several of the researchers listed had by no means denied man-made climate change.

In 2009 Morano started his own website Climate Depot. He played an important role in scandalizing the hacking incident at the University of East Anglia's climate research center as the so-called "Climategate Affair", which he described as the "greatest scandal in modern science". In this concerted action in the run-up to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in 2009 , email accounts were hacked by a large number of climate researchers and quotes from climate researchers that were out of context were posted online in order to undermine their authority. In retrospect, several investigations showed that the scientists concerned had not committed any wrongdoing.

In 2011 he appeared at a press conference at the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban . In 2011 and 2012 he was a frequent guest on the radio show of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones . In 2013 he worked among other things for the Conservative Congressman David McKinley for a written statement for a hearing in the US House of Representatives.

Climate researchers have accused Morano of being behind e-mail campaigns in which climate researchers are attacked with hate mail and personal attacks. Morano himself says that he does not wish climate researchers any harm, but he believes "we should kick them while they are on the ground". They deserved "to be flogged in public". The climate researcher James E. Hansen described Morano as a "wannabe unabomber " and suggested medical treatment to him. Morano openly admitted his attacks on climate researchers in the film Merchants of Doubt , which is based on the book of the same name :

“You can't be afraid of the absolute hand-to-hand combat, metaphorically, and you've got to name names and you've got to go after individuals. You can't just go after a system. And that's what I think I enjoy the most; is going after the individuals. Because that's where something lives or dies. [...] I'd say it's possible I posted Ben Santer's email in the early days of Climate Depot, maybe the first six months. He's far from the only one I've done that to. "

“You mustn't be afraid of absolute hand-to-hand combat, metaphorically speaking, and you have to name names and attack individuals. You can't just go for a system. And I think that's what I enjoy most, which is tracking the individuals. Because something lives or dies there. [...] I'd say it's possible I posted Ben Santer's email in the early days of Climate Depot, maybe the first six months. He's by no means the only one I've done this to. "

He also stated that he was not a scientist, "but I do play one on TV occasionally". At the same point, he also explained the fundamental goal of climate change deniers to stop any change:

“Gridlock is the greatest friend a global warming skeptic has because that's all you really want. There's no legislation we're championing. We're the negative force. We're just trying to stop stuff.Gridlock is the greatest friend a global warming skeptic has because that's all you really want. There's no legislation we're championing. We're the negative force. We're just trying to stop stuff. "

“A complete standstill is the greatest friend you have as a skeptic about global warming, because that's all you really want. There is no legislation that we advocate. We are the negative force. We're just trying to stop things. "

In 2017 he appeared as a guest speaker at a "climate conference" organized by the two climate denial organizations EIKE and CFACT in Düsseldorf.
