Christopher Walter Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley (born February 14, 1952 ) is a British public speaker, former newspaper editor and hereditary peer .

As a former member of the Conservative Party , he moved to the right-wing populist UK Independence Party in 2010 and later to the Brexit Party. He had previously worked in the Conservative Central Office and in the 1980s with Margaret Thatcher in the Number 10 Policy Unit. The invention of the eternity puzzle goes back to him . Monckton is a well-known actor on the British climate denial scene . A refutation of the myths about climate change spread by Monckton by the scientist John P. Abraham received a lot of media attention .

Personal

He was born the eldest son of Major General Gilbert Monckton, 2nd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, and Marianna Letitia (née Bower), the former High Sheriff of Kent and Lady of the Order of Malta . He himself is a knight of honor and devotion to the order. Monckton has three brothers and a sister, Rosa Monckton, who is married to Dominic Lawson. He was raised Roman Catholic.

When his father died in 2006, he inherited his Viscount title. Since the House of Lords Act was introduced in 1999, this is no longer linked to a hereditary seat in the British House of Lords . Monckton nevertheless referred to himself several times as a member of the British House of Lords (albeit without a seat or right to vote). In July 2011, the House of Lords officially declared that Monckton “was not and never was a member of the House of Lords” and asked Monckton to refrain from any further allegations in the future.

Political positions

In 1987 Monckton received severe criticism for his claim that the only way to stop AIDS would be to permanently and compulsorily quarantine all HIV- positive people. In a 2007 interview, Monckton said that “lobby groups howled” after his proposals, and spoke of a “ homosexual lobby” in this context .

The declared EU skeptic Monckton is in favor of Great Britain leaving the European Union , which he describes as "anti-democratic".

He's as climate change deniers known of the man-made global warming denies and writes u. a. regular contributions to EIKE . With his theses, however, he encountered sharp opposition from scientists, including in a 2010 statement by 21 leading climate researchers.

On the occasion of the UN climate conference in Copenhagen in 2009, Monckton announced that a “ communist world government” was threatened there .

In addition, he repeatedly questioned the birthplace of Barack Obama and thus the legitimacy of the Obama presidency.

In February 2013, Monckton appeared as a guest speaker at an event of the Rise Up Australia Party hosted by Christian preacher and anti-abortionist Daniel Nalliah.

In 2017 he appeared as a guest speaker at a “climate conference” in Düsseldorf, organized by the two climate denial organizations EIKE and CFACT .

In September 2019 he was one of the authors of the European Climate Declaration initiated by the climate denial organization Clintel and addressed to the UN , in which the existence of the climate crisis is denied.
