Eike ( Eike ? / I , also: Aike, Eicke, Eycke, Eyke, Ayke; male also Eik and Eiko (with alternative spellings); female also Eika (with alternative spellings)) is a given name that is both male and (less often ) is used by women and is mainly to be found in northern Germany. It is the nickname or short form of names that begin with "Ecke-" as in Eckehard or "Eg-", "Edel-" and "Adel-" and is derived from the Old High German "Ekka" (for "tip") , "Blade") or "sword", or the Germanic "agjō-" ("sword"). According to a decision by the Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court in 1989, the name Eike is gender-neutral and, until a significant and landmark decision by the Federal Administrative Court in Germany in 2008, was only allowed to be given in conjunction with another name that clearly identifies the child's gender.
