Eike Haberland
Eike Friedrich Georg Haberland (born May 18, 1924 in Detmold ; † June 6, 1992 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German ethnologist .
Life
He spent his school days in Detmold, Nauen in Havelland and Potsdam . In 1942 he finished his education with the university entrance qualification. From 1946 to 1950 he studied ethnology , classical philology, ancient history, oriental studies, religious studies and African linguistics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and at the University of Mainz . Haberland received his doctorate in 1950 under Adolf Jensen in the field of ethnology with a treatise on "The Gada system of the South Abyssinian peoples". In 1962 he completed his habilitation with “Investigations on the Ethiopian Kingdom” in Frankfurt am Main. After working as a full professor at the Institute for Ethnology at the University of Mainz since 1965, he became Professor for Culture and Ethnology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main in 1968 and also took over the management of the Frobenius Institute.
He was a student of Adolf Ellegard Jensen . Just like Leo Frobenius and Jensen, Haberland was also a representative of cultural morphology and his successor as head of the Frobenius Institute from 1968 to 1992.
As a researcher, his interest led him 1950–1952, 1954–1955, 1967, 1970–1971, 1972–1974 to Ethiopia and 1961 and 1963 to New Guinea .
In recognition of his research he received the "Heinrich Barth Prize" of the German Africa Society in 1967, the "Ethiopian State Prize for Science" (Haile Selassie Prize) in 1971, and in 1981 he became the "Officier Ordre du Lion du Sénégal". He was a member of the UNESCO Commission for African History since 1970 and the German UNESCO Commission since 1973.
Act
Haberland was interested in researching non-European cultures without writing. He was particularly interested in historical research, as it has developed from ethnology in German-speaking countries. The research is based not only on the "absolute chronology", but on "cultural-historical speculation". What is important here is the perspective of today's cultures, which are seen as “representatives” of earlier stages in human history. Haberland was of the opinion that historical ethnology must break away from the "evolutionist-cultural-theoretical" models. The task of historical ethnology should be to create a unity from “ethno-history” and “cultural history”. In order to carry out "real historical research" it was important to him not only to use existing European sources and social anthropology. Rather, it was important to include not only the oral traditions but also the original written sources of the peoples examined and the writings of the neighboring high cultures. These studies assume knowledge of the languages and relate to new methods of archeology, e.g. B. aerial photographs or thermoluminescence, with a. For Haberland, this work was both a necessity and an obligation in order to be able to contribute to helping the peoples who had been robbed of their identity by colonization to regain their identity.
estate
Haberland has left a large “ethnographic collection” with over 4000 objects from different regions of Africa. The Frobenius Institute has 7 boxes with letters, manuscripts, photos and collections.
