Eike W. Schamp

Eike W. Schamp (born January 14, 1941 in Frankfurt am Main ; † February 8, 2019 ) was a German geographer and professor emeritus at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Life

Eike W. Schamp completed his studies in economics, geography, climatology and soil science at the University of Cologne in 1967 with a degree in economics.

After spending several months in Africa, he did his doctorate , which he completed in 1971 on a methodological topic. The habilitation with Erich Otremba then took place in 1977 with a topic on the early development of industry in Francophone Central Africa , also in Cologne.

In 1978, Schamp was appointed professor of economic geography at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , before he accepted an appointment at the University of Göttingen in 1979 .

From 1989 to 2006 Eike W. Schamp held the chair for general economic geography at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Since March 2006 he was Professor of Economic Geography retired and only director of research projects at the University of Frankfurt am Main.

Schamp died in 2019 at the age of 78 and was buried in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne .

Schamps research covered key aspects of the current economic geography globalization research . This included industrial and small-scale regional development as well as the reorganization of industrial production structures (in Africa and Europe), research into global value chains, the role of the financial sector and finally the importance of knowledge for regional development.
