Achim Brunnengräber (* 1963 in Lorsch ) is a German political scientist specializing in international relations .

Life

Brunnengräber completed a teaching degree with subjects such as social studies , physics and mathematics at the Heidelberg University of Education between 1983 and 1987 . He then moved to the Free University of Berlin in 1988 , where he began studying political science, which he completed in 1992 with a degree in political science. This was followed by postgraduate studies in development policy with a focus on non-governmental organizations at the University of Bremen from 1993 to 1995 , with which Brunnengräber also qualified as a development politician in 1996.

In 1996 he returned to the University of Berlin to there at the Department of Political and Social Sciences to do a doctorate . His dissertation , presented and defended in 2000, deals with the topic of transnational networks in the conflict field of climate. Non-governmental organizations as "new" actors in international politics . Brunnengräber completed his habilitation in the same department in July 2007 with a thesis on global climate governance. A multi-level analysis of the political economy of the climate and a lecture on parliaments in the globalization process .

Following his habilitation, Brunnengräber was appointed private lecturer at the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the Free University of Berlin . At the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science there , he received a visiting professorship for international political economy in the 2007/08 winter semester . From the winter semester 2009/10 to the summer semester 2012 he was a substitute professor for international politics at the Technical University of Dresden .

Research activity

In his research, Achim Brunnengräber mainly deals with international political economy , theories of international relations, multilevel governance and global governance , environmental and climate policy , global political networks , global protest movements and forms of global democracy .

Brunnengräber is a liaison professor and a member of the North-South Scientific Advisory Board of the Heinrich Böll Foundation . He is also a member of the scientific advisory board of the non-governmental organization Attac . From March 2000 to October 2002 Brunnengräber was a research assistant for the Bundestag member Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker , the chairman of the Enquête Commission Globalization of the World Economy - Challenges and Answers . Between May 2002 and June 2007 he headed the research project Global Governance and Climate Change funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research . A multi-level analysis of the conditions, risks and opportunities of social-ecological transformation .

Since 2012, Achim Brunnengräber has been the head of the international comparative analysis of disposal governance in the multilevel system with special consideration of actors, political instruments and institutions as a sub-project of the research platform Disposal options for radioactive residues: Interdisciplinary analyzes and development of assessment bases (ENTRIA) .

Together with Lutz Mez , Brunnengräber publishes the energy policy and climate protection series of books published by VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften .
