The two-color rice rats ( Oecomys ) are a genus of rodents from the group of New World mice that lives in Central and South America . They include 16 types.
features
Two-tone rice rats reach a head body length of 12 to 15 centimeters and a tail length of 12 to 16 centimeters. As far as known, the weight is 20 to 70 grams. Their fur is brown, reddish brown or blackish in color on the upper side and mottled with black hair, the underside is white or light brown. The tail is hairy, in some species also slightly bushy. The feet are wide and adapted to a climbing lifestyle.
Distribution and way of life
These rodents live in southern Central and northern South America, their range extends from Costa Rica to central Brazil . They inhabit both grasslands and forests.
Very little is known about the way of life. Many species live on trees, but some often stay on the ground.
According to the IUCN , the species O. cleberi is endangered, it is only known from the Brazilian federal district . All other species are not threatened.
The species
Wilson & Reeder (2005) distinguish 15 types:
- Oecomys auyantepui lives in southern Venezuela, the three Guyana states and northern Brazil.
- Oecomys bicolor is widespread from eastern Panama to central Brazil.
- Oecomys catherinae lives in southeastern Brazil.
- Oecomys cleberi is only known from the federal district of Brazil and is highly endangered.
- Oecomys concolor occurs from southern Venezuela to northern Bolivia, the exact distribution area is unclear.
- Oecomys flavicans inhabits Colombia and Venezuela.
- Oecomys franciscorum inhabits the Chaco .
- Oecomys mamorae lives in Bolivia, northern Paraguay and western Brazil.
- Oecomys paricola is native to Brazil south of the Amazon, the exact distribution area is unclear.
- Oecomys phaeotis inhabits - as far as is known - eastern Peru.
- Oecomys rex lives in southern Venezuela, the three Guyana states and northern Brazil.
- Oecomys roberti is widespread from southern Venezuela to central Brazil.
- Oecomys rutilus occurs in the three Guyana states and northern Brazil.
- Oecomys speciosus lives in Colombia, Venezuela and on the island of Trinidad.
- Oecomys superans occurs from Colombia to Peru.
- Oecomys trinitatis is distributed from Costa Rica to Central Brazil including the island of Trinidad.
