The Oerliker Park is a 17,500 square meter public park in the district Oerlikon in the north of Zurich . It is the first and largest of four new parks that were built by Grün Stadt Zürich in the development area Zentrum Zürich Nord at the beginning of the 21st century. The Oerliker Park was opened to the public in 2001. It was followed by the MFO Park (2002), the Louis-Häfliger-Park (2003) and the Wahlenpark(2005). They are all within a short walking distance of each other. Each park is a work of garden architecture, tailored to the needs of the neighborhood and designed as a neighborhood park, neighborhood park or play park. Taken together, they present current trends in open space planning and landscape architecture. With the Zentrum Nord project, one of the largest inner-city industrial areas in Switzerland was given a new use, with the park area being built in front of the overbuilding with residential and commercial buildings.

Emergence

The landscape architects Zulauf, Seippel and Schweingruber from Baden won the study contract for the Oerliker Park in 1997 together with the architects Sabina Hubacher and Christoph Haerle. In their project they deal with the factors of time and change. Taking into account the newly emerging quarter, the contaminated sites in the ground from the industrial past of the area, the quarter street that divides the park into two halves and the park users, who were still unknown at the time of planning, a system should be created that is not finished, but can change continuously.

layout

The Oerliker Park is determined by around a thousand trees planted in a narrow grid of 4 × 4 meters, which will develop into a tree hall. Mainly ash trees interspersed with fields of birch , cherry , sweetgum and bluebell trees . The forest-like tree hall is thinned out at intervals of several years.

A red pavilion, a blue observation tower, a turquoise, elongated fountain and a clearing complete the field of trees. The clearing, which is partially covered with wooden planks, is designed as a so-called intervention zone that allows various forms of use. Due to the concerns and needs of the residents formulated in 2007, the intervention zone was a. equipped with a large climbing frame.

The Oerliker Park is divided in two by Birchstrasse.

The eastern part was previously used as a sports facility for the employees of the ABB company and is now characterized by the blue tower, which is located in the middle of the tree field and is reminiscent of the factory chimneys of the former industrial district. The steel stairs running around the blue concrete core lead in a spiral through the tree layer. The viewing platform at a height of 35 meters allows a wide view of the quarter. It is located at the same level as Bucheggplatz and offers a line of sight to the city center and Uetliberg . A gravel field with a winding network of paths, an area with gravel lawn, charcoal grills, chess games and table tennis complete the eastern part.

The western part was used by the machine works Oerlikon as a landfill and today consists of various play equipment for small children, an area with gravel, a wooden grate and a long well beam with a water feature. The red pavilion can be used for various occasions. Different seating and loungers as well as drinking water fountains are located on both sides of the park.

In 2001 Oerliker Park received the award for good building from the city of Zurich.

While the park was initially received with skepticism by the local population, it is now enjoying great popularity.
