Of Spire & Throne is a Death Doom band founded in Edinburgh in 2009 .

history

Of Spire & Throne was founded by Ali Lauder, Nick Herd, Graham Stewart and Steven Duffus in 2009. In April of the same year, the group made their first appearance with Dead in the Woods , Enhahre and Uncalm in a bar. In October of the following year, the group released a demo album , which was recorded in the Split Level Studios. In the same month, bassist Nick Herd left the group and was later replaced by Matt Davies. The first regular release was the EP The Trial of Failure in September 2011 . A second EP followed in June 2012. The second EP Vagary meanwhile contained a 21-minute piece. In the same year, the group made a tour across the Scottish border for the first time and performed in Newcastle and Birmingham , among others . Guitarist Steven Duffus left the group in March 2013 and was not replaced. As a trio, Of Spire & Throne played a UK tour with the Dutch band Ortega in November of that year . To tour a common and strictly limited was split - cassette on the label of the Ortega-singer Tartarus Records published. The third EP Toll of the Wound was released in May 2014 by Broken Limbs Recordings . In October and November of that year the band toured England, Wales and Scotland.

Following the tour, Of Spire & Throne recorded the first studio album, Sanctum in the Light , which was released in October 2015 via Aesthetic Death Records . The album was produced by Chris Fielding , who also worked on albums by Primordial and Napalm Death , and mastered by James Plotkin ( OLD , Lotus Eaters , Khanate ). The album received mostly positive reviews.

After more performances and a contribution to the My Dying Bride dedicated tribute album A Lake of Ghosts - The Long Shadow of My Dying Bride released the trio in winter 2018 Penance their second studio album after a lengthy recording and production process. The album was recorded in the Wall of Sound Recording Studio between November 2016 and July 2017 by Stu Gordon, mixed in the Secret Bathroom Recording Studio by Andrew Oswald from November 2017 to April 2018 and mastered in the Resonance Sound Studio by Dan Lowndes in April and May 2018 Published December 2018 via Bandcamp as a free download and released on CD by Aesthetic Death in December of the same year. Penance was received similarly positively to the previous album.

style

The style of the group is described as Death Doom with elements from Sludge , Drone and Funeral Doom . The high degree of distortion as well as incorporated overdrive suggest a proximity to Sludge and Drone Doom, while the slow game of the group also offers links to Funeral Doom. The dynamics of the sound are also attested to being close to Neurosis and thus to Post-Metal . The vocals alternate between typical Death Metal growling and screaming described as "plaintive" and "suffering" . The rhythm group is sometimes assigned a central role, which makes the sound of the group appear progressive and multi-layered.
