The open general cargo ship ( open hatch general cargo , abbreviated OHGC ) is a type of ship that can be used to transport bulk cargo , bulk cargo and sometimes also containers.

details

Open general cargo ships are a subspecies of the bulk carrier with double hull , boxförmigem cargo space, full deck openings and intermediate decks . Through their design as open boat with little or no Unterstaudach they offer the possibility of vertical access to the entire cargo space , making the transport of bulk materials, project cargo and various mass packaged goods, such as forest products such as lumber, pulp or paper or steel products, as well as the ConBulk ship also enables the transport of containers. For cargo handling, ships of this type usually have either cranes or gantry cranes, which are set up for flexible use with grabs, hooks, magnetic or pneumatic devices and spreaders . Some of the ships are used on fixed routes, often with unpaired cargo volumes, but the majority of the ships are usually employed in tramp shipping .

The first ships of this type planned and built as such were the Del Rio class built in the United States from 1960 (still without a double hull) or the Poltava class built for Soviet shipping companies from 1962 . These resorted to the arrangement of two or three side-by-side hatches with longitudinal panels arranged in between to absorb the torsional forces . Today's ships of this type are basically the same as the open multi-purpose bulk cargo carriers , but, unlike them, have (often removable) tween decks.
