Poltava

The Poltava class , also Poltava type or Project 594 or Bezhitsa class , Bezhitsa type or Project 595 , project 595E units intended for export , is a series of general cargo ships . They were the first Soviet open general cargo ships .

details

The design of the ship type was carried out under the direction of BK Sidorov at the Chernomorsky Sudostroitelni Zavod ( Black Sea Shipyard ) in Mykolaiv. The design was built from 1961 to 1970 at the Nosenko shipyard in Mykolaiv (Poltava class) and from 1961 to 1974 at the Kherson shipyard in Cherson (Bezhitsa class). With 19 units, a large part of the Project 594 and Project 595 ships were ordered by the Ukrainian Black Sea Shipping Company, Blasco. 34 Project 595E ships were exported to Greece, Germany, Pakistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Hungary and India.

In terms of shipbuilding, the most outstanding feature of the ship's design was its construction as one of the world's first types of open general cargo ship . The design with little under-stowage of only 1.4 to 1.6 meters enabled faster and, especially in the case of bulky cargo, easier cargo handling. The large degree of deck opening was implemented in shipbuilding terms by the installation of double hatches with a middle lengthwise hull in order to be able to absorb the torsional forces occurring in the hull. In front of the superstructures, which were moved far aft, there were five cargo holds with a grain volume of 17,850 m³ or a bale volume of 16,440 m³, the intermediate decks of which were each closed with hydraulic smooth hatch covers. Aft there was another refrigerated hold with a volume of 920 m³. The main hatch covers were also designed as hydraulic folding hatch covers. The loading equipment consisted of 13 electrohydraulic ship cranes and a 60-ton heavy lift boom for taking over heavy lifts in hatches 3 and 4.
