According to legend, Offo , also Uffo , (around 600) was an Irish-Scottish monk of royal blood and the founder of the Schuttern monastery ( Offonis cella ) in 603. He is also credited with founding Offenburg ( Offonis pyrgum ).

In a seal of the Schuttern monastery from 1355, King Offo is named as the founder (REX OFFO FVNDATOR IBIDEM).

The humanist and theologian Paul Volz (1480–1544) speaks in the Schuttern monastery chronicle from the 16th century of an Offo rex Angliae , a King of England as the founder of the cell . In addition, there is a tumba offonis in the church, Offo 's grave with a grave slab.

Offo is regionally considered a popular saint. On January 14th, the Offotag is celebrated in Schuttern in memory of the legendary founder of the monastery. Around 1700 the day was celebrated with a feeding of the poor , during which up to 1000 alms recipients from the region made a pilgrimage to Schuttern, and correspondingly more in times of need. The local celebrities were also invited to the festival.
