Ohrigstad is a place north of Lydenburg in the Limpopo Province in South Africa . In 2011 it had 521 inhabitants.

Here a fortress was founded in 1845 by a group of Voortrekkers under the leadership of Andries Hendrik Potgieter with the help of the Dutch trader Gregorius Ohrig. Many settlers then died of malaria , so that the remaining settlers left the area. They didn't come back until the disease could be contained. On May 14, 1873, after the discovery of gold in the Selati River , the area was proclaimed a public gold field.

After the restructuring of the provinces of South Africa in 1994, Ohrigstad belonged to the Mpumalanga Province .

Infrastructure

Ohrigstad is connected to the South African trunk road network with the R36 . Two petrol stations and a few shops characterize the place as a local business center and rest stop for long-distance drivers. Ohrigstad also has a rail connection, but there is no longer any passenger traffic. In the mornings and evenings, a city-to-city bus from / to Johannesburg stops in Ohrigstad.
